Kathleen Banchero was a young teacher who had left her car at the Detroit Boat Club on Belle Isle while she attended a regatta in Canada with her sister and brother-in-law. When she returned, the police had blocked the bridge to Belle Isle and were hesitant to let her pass to get her car.

In this interview, Begole recounts his father's time serving in France, his own childhood on East Grand Boulevard, his time serving in World War II and the day the Allies marched into Rome. In 1967, he was the Director of Public Safety in Novi, MI. When they heard about the unrest in Detroit, he was hesitant to offer his new fire engine but he and a few of his men volunteered to come down and help with the situation. They attempted to help a man who was shot driving his car and were later accused by the FBI of shooting the man themselves.
